Data classification is an important step in heightening a district’s security posture. Classifying data is the process of
organizing or categorizing data based on the level of impact that the loss of data would have on the district. Once this
process is complete, decisions about storage and transmission of data can be made.

Texas Senate Bill 820 requires each school district to have an information security policy that addresses threats to net-
works and data, engages employees in the protection of networks and data, outlines roles and responsibilities, estab-
lishes user access levels, and identifies the consequences for failing to follow district policy.
