STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Research Administration SOP No: A012 Service Package Grants (SPG) &
Mission Grants (MG)
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to describe the standard procedures to be followed for submissions of Service Package or Mission Grants
2. INTRODUCTION
The advancement of medical knowledge through b a s i c , clinical, translational, applied, and population health research is a core mission of Children’s Medical Center Dallas. In support of this mission, Children’s Health established the Service Package and Mission Grants for biostatistical, scientific/grant writing, clinical research support, and some fees that are associated with consortium/collaborative studies. These mechanisms will not support principal investigator salaries, travel, lab supplies/reagents, equipment, software, etc.
These programs provide funding for investigators conducting innovative clinical, translational applied, and population health research projects, with the expectation that this early investment will result in sustainable extramural funding. The intent of the funding is to provide support for investigators who do not have other funding available to them via grants (intramural or extramural), start-up or discretionary funds, UT Southwestern Foundation or Children’s Health Foundation funds.
3. SCOPE
This SOP applies to Research Administration and Finance.
4. RESPONSIBILITIES
4.1 Research Administration
Research Administration (RA) shepherds the submission, review, notification, and follow-up process for all Service Package and Mission Grants and notifies Research Finance (Finance) when a grant application has been granted approval for funding.
Research Finance
Finance is responsible for tracking spending and sending the Principal Investigator (PI) the necessary notifications at the end of the award period. More detailed information is listed in Section 5 of this SOP.
5. SPECIFIC PROCEDURE 5.1 Receipt of application
The PI will send either their completed application or Letter of Intent (for Mission Grants) to the Director of Research Administration. The Director will review the application for administrative adherence, mission support, and will also perform a cursory scientific review. If concerns are identified, the Director will send the application back to the PI for revisions. If the application is found to have merit, the Director will send the application to the Grant Writer and Lead Biostatistician requesting official scientific and statistical reviews, respectively.
