How Students Participation in Red Cross Activities

Contributes to Later Education through Nursing School

The Red Cross is one of the oldest humanitarian organizations in the world, which carries out
its numerous activities through national societies in as many as 192 countries. In Croatia, the
Red Cross has been active since 1878 with the establishment of the first voluntary associations
in Zadar, Zagreb and Dubrovnik. Today, the Croatian Red Cross operates through many
activities such as prevention of human trafficking, organization and coordination of voluntary
blood donation, preparation and action in crisis situations, search for missing persons, training
of rescuers, promotion of health through public health actions and many others. In addition to
all of the above, the Red Cross organizes and conducts first aid training for primary and
secondary schools, where students, passing through the training, gain basic knowledge of
providing first aid procedures to injured or suddenly ill persons. Additional motivation for
young people to learn is achieved by organizing a first aid competition, which is held every
year on as many as 3 levels. The age of secondary school students who access the training is
usually between 16 and 18 years old, which means that secondary school students in the 2nd
and/or 3rd grade attend the training. In the context of nursing school students, it can be observed
that certain knowledge and skills acquired during first aid training greatly help students through
further education. Skills such as primarily good communication, assessing the condition of an
injured person, organizational skills, providing assistance to the injured, basic life support
procedures from infancy to adulthood, etc. During their education, medical school students have
a subject called Emergency Medical Procedures, which is directly related to with first aid, which
they had previously learned. In addition, this paper will present a lot of common points that first
aid has with the medical school curriculum, as well as many advantages of first aid training for
               medical school students.
