Agricultural sustainability assessment: a network-based

Abstract. Sustainability assessment plays an essential role in the modern agricultural business
management. There are various assessment approaches based on traditional economic indicators
have been proved to be empirically inappropriate. This study aims to establish a concise and
testable sustainability assessment approach by employing the network and evolutionary
geographic economic theory. The big data of Chinese agricultural enterprises in Jiangsu
Province has enriched our research fruit in terms of empirical evidence. Results indicated the
agricultural business sustainability has been generally increasing in provincial level for last
twenty years, but the development paths in city level were diversified. Relevant
recommendations were focused on the openness governance and horizontal integration of local
agricultural business.
