As member of the local chapter of the Southern Christian Confer-
ence (SCLC), under the direction of then President Levi Wicox, Mr.
Malachi attended National SCLC strategy meetings, including a his-
toric meeting at Frogmore, St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
In addition to fighting to end the vestiges of Jim Crow and discrimi-
nation in city, the Florida Black Front spearheaded the movement
to hire the first black firemen in the City of Jacksonville.
The Florida Black Front organized tenant associations throughout
the state of Florida resulting in the Landlord-Tenant Act that pre-
vents illegal evictions.
In the 1970s and throughout the 1980s Mr. Malachi managed the
Flag Street Apartment Complex, a low to moderate income housing
development in Grand Park.
As a community organizer and volunteer, he implemented youth
projects that included athletic and academic programs for neigh-
borhood youth ages 6-19. Those projects included educational field
trips to area businesses ranging from the local Coca Cola plant on
Huron Street to area supermarkets.
In collaboration with FCCJ, G.E.D. classes were offered on-site at
the Flag Street Community Center to residents as well as members
of the Grand Park community.
Mr. Malachi was chosen as the Grand Marshal of the MLK Holiday
Grand Parade by unanimous consent based on his lifetime body of
work throughout various communities in Jacksonville.
