A Black Holiday?
MLK Day is not a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday. And it is the
young people of all races and religions who hold the keys to the
fulfillment of his dream. We commemorate on this holiday the
ecumenical and visionary who embraced the unity of all faiths in love
and truth.
Meaning
The holiday celebrates the values of equality, tolerance, and interra-
cial cooperation. It also commemorates Dr. King’s inspiring words and
his dream for America.
Celebration
The holiday is observed in more than 100 nations. It’s a day for peo-
ple from different cultural backgrounds to come together in a spirit of
brotherhood and sisterhood.
National Day of Service
It’s the only federal holiday that’s also a national day of service,
encouraging Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.
Impact
The holiday honors the civil rights leader’s impact on voting rights,
volunteerism, educational progress, and economic progress.
