The Canadian Golf Superintendents
Association (CGSA) along with the
National Golf Course Owners
Association Canada (NGCOA
Canada) recently marked the first
anniversary of bringing the GEO
Program to Canada. Sustainable Golf
Canada is an initiative to further
support and recognize golf facilities
for their sustainability and climate
action. This initiative is a long-term
project supported and facilitated by
both associations in collaboration
with the international, not-for-profit
GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation.
The GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation is based in North Berwick, Scotland.
The golf programs it provides are being used in more than 75 countries today.
Founded nearly 20 years ago as a pioneer in what has become the sport and
sustainability movement, GEO is dedicated to helping golf navigate
sustainability — across both the amateur and professional game — by
providing strategy, industry-wide solutions, and a credible certification label.
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE PROGRAM
The Foundation is dedicated to what it calls “a comprehensive, innovative
approach to sustainability, via tailored platforms available to golf courses and
facilities”. It also partners with national and regional golf associations, such as
the NGCOA Canada and CGSA, tours and tournaments, and even professional
players as individuals.
The core components of the Sustainable Golf Canada initiative include:
• Free provision of the Foundation’s OnCourse Program for sustainable golf
facilities and course management.
• Access to annual Sustainable Golf Scorecards and Carbon Footprint Reports.
• Creation of a valuable industry data bank to support golf’s positive public
profile.
