I always check references. I don’t call their neighbours, teachers, or relatives. I call previous employers. If they have worked in the golf industry, chances are I know their previous boss or am familiar enough to get a real honest reference. I am more concerned with work ethic, attitude, getting along with people, etc., than how experienced they are.
Once I offer the person a job and they accept the position, I feel the hard part is over. I give them a detailed employee manual with all the club’s policies and procedures as well as all the government regulations for health and safety, work place harassment, etc. I try to make them feel comfortable and at ease and explain to them how important training and communication are. I believe when new employees do something wrong, first it is usually because they were not trained enough or there was a communication breakdown. Employees will only be as good as the person training them is. Make sure whoever is training the
new employees does it the way you want it done - or do it Golf

Welcome Kit
For new hires, we go through their job description and briefly present them our “Employee Welcome Kit.” The Kit is the employee’s responsibility to read, understand & respect its content (policies, health & safety guidelines, procedures, work ethics, organisation chart, etc.) We walk them through the facility introducing personnel of all departments and then the training part of their position begins.
