How Will Parental Alienation Affect My Child and Our Relationship
Parental alienation is the unjustified rejection of a parent caused by the negative influence of the other parent. The act of turning a child against a loving and bonded parent happens in almost every high conflict separation or divorce and it can happen to children within an intact family. The loss of a parental relationship is most likely to occur in the (mild, moderate, or severe) severe stage of alienation (Darnall, 1999).
PA begins when a parent employs various strategies and repetitive pro-
gramming to distort a child’s critical thinking. This parental programming
causes a child to wrongly believe a trusted parent is suddenly dangerous
and a potential threat to their welfare. Psychological research has conclud-
ed that alienated-children will encounter problems with low self-esteem,
self-hatred, lack of trust, depression, substance abuse, and PTSD. Most mental health professionals with compe- tency in this relational problem view parental alienation as a serious form of psychological abuse. If you are a targeted parent, you will be extremely challenged by your child’s rejection. Inappropriate responses to this rejec- tion leads to making poor decisions that only make matters worse. A targeted parent should seek the services of a mental health consultant to prevent parenting errors that can cause unintended, supplemental harm.
