Why You Need a Mental Health Consultant
1. Your attorney does not have the continuing education training or competency to fully understand the parameters of therapeutic interventions employed by mental health professionals. Nor can they adequately vet or select the right practitioners to address the unique and specific problems in your case. You need a Mental Health Consultant to assist you (and your attorney) in selecting practitioners for treatment
and evaluation services.
2. Your attorney does not understand the social science literature regarding parental alienation and other parent-child relational problems, nor are they familiar with social science research on therapeutic intervention outcomes. A mental health professional will be needed to prepare your attorney for discussions with opposing counsel and in knowing when to reject settlement offers that can worsen your family dynamics.
3. Your attorney is unfamiliar with ethical and professional codes of conduct that impact mental health professionals and their ability to accept a referral or be involved in your case.
4. Your attorney is not prepared to correctly litigate issues regarding therapeutic interventions nor correctly vet the credentials of mental health professionals.
5. As a parent, you are at risk of losing a relationship with your child(ren). You do not have the guidance you will need to give the right answers to your children.
6. As a parent, you are at risk of over-reacting or acting out and that can damage your parent-child relationship and your case in court.
7. As a parent, your responses could contribute to your child’s rejection. Reactive behavior can trigger a greater regression in the relationship.
8. Your legal fees will be excessive if you do not have a mental health consultant to guide your attorney into litigation strategies that promote expeditious treatment interventions.
9. Your new spouse or partner and their extended family members want a healthy relationship with your child(ren). These fragile relationships will need the support of a mental health consultant.
10. A mental health consultant can calm you down and help you at times when you feel frustrated, hurt, angry, or depressed; when your lawyer is not available; when a crisis requires an immediate expert to help you; when you feel you have no idea what to do next; when you panic; and when your new spouse or partner feels helpless and hurt. There really is no logic to dismiss the need for the services of a mental health consultant.
