Chapter 1
Ad & Funnel Profitability
The need to have a back end to your book is just one consequence of a quickly changing publishing industry. E-books, especially, are opening the doors to whole new worlds of possibilities and paths for profitability.
What is a back end? One or more ways for a reader to engage with you and your business further whether that be a coaching program, course, product, etc.
When our book failed in 2018, we had to find new ways to get it out. This also opened up a new opportunity for sponsored content, another way for an author to fund great content. Sponsored content is content that you produce in which someone else pays you to be a part of.
We turned our book, Experience Over Degrees into the world’s first sponsored book.
I sat in coffee shops weekend after weekend while I had my day job, compiling and emailing career services at every university across the US to convince them to distribute our eBook to their students.
Eleven colleges agreed, including the business schools at Syracuse, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech, but they wouldn’t pay for it.
What did we have?
We now had a distribution list of 40,000+ students.
