Beautiful Kosrae (pronounced Kosh-rye) is one of the island States of
the Federated States of Micronesia, just a delightful boat ride north of
the Equator. The second largest island, Kosrae is a paradise for divers
and adventurers alike, with the most beautiful white beaches in Mi-
cronesia. Kosrae International Airport (IATA code KSA) is located on
an artificial island within the fringing reef about 150 meters from the
coast and is connected to the main island by a causeway. It is served by
United Air Lines (formerly Continental Micronesia) “Island Hopper”
flights (twice a week in each direction) between Hawaii and Guam,
stopping at other FSM and Marshallese destinations on the way. Na-
uru Airlines also connect weekly to Brisbane in Australia and Nadi
in Fiji.
Kosrae, called “The Sleeping Lady” because of the shape of one of its
picturesque mountains is covered with dense tropical jungles and
high volcanic peaks, with lush river valleys and spectacular views. A
hike up Mount Finkol will take the explorer past a series of gushing
waterfalls pouring through Kosrae’s verdant jungle.
The island is surrounded by very healthy fringing reefs teeming with
splendidly colorful tropical fish feeding off the spectacular corals. Vis- are located in these areas. The wind can result in faster currents which

sea turtles and large rays winging their way through the blue waters.
The coral reefs, which slope steeply into the clear blue depths, are one
of the great attractions of Kosrae.
The famous mangroves of the island present a world of opportunity
to see nature in all of its peace and solitude. In some places they form
a high jungle canopy where channels rise and fall with the tides. Im-
mense root systems and a myriad of animal and plant life flourish
in these complicated ecosystems. Kosrae has had the foresight to set
aside large tracts for its marine park and the result is one of the most
pristine mangrove areas in the world, complete with rare indigenous
trees and wonderful birdlife. It is cast in quiet images of sunny, un-
spoiled beaches, caressed by crystal waters and deep blue skies.

DIVE SEASON: Year around.
VISIBILITY: Visibility is pristine, averaging 100 feet (30M).
WATER TEMPERATURE: The water temperature is a fairly constant
82F (28º C).
WEATHER: During the summer (June to October) the water is gen-
erally calmer and the currents lighter making for easy diving. In the
winter (late November to May), diving may be limited to the south
and west sides of the island. Some of the most spectacular dive sites
can also bring the larger pelagics into the reef.
