Coral Reef Teacher’s Guide Benefits, Threats, and Solutions
REEF RELIEF is working with international
NGO’s to stop the use of cyanide in the col-
lection of tropical fish for the aquarium trade.
The Haribon Foundation in the Philippines
and Ocean Voice International in Canada re-
train fishers in traditional net fishing meth-
ods and assist the Federation of Aquar-
ium Fish Col-lectors of the Philippines in
establishing a reliable source of cyanide-free
fish. The Hayuma Foundation educates villagers
about the importance protecting their marine
environment. The International Marinelife Alliance
holds training programs in Filipino fishing
communities and has developed a Cyanide
Detection Test which is used to test fish be-
fore export. However, there is still much to
be done, as it is estimated that 95% of fishers
continue to use cyanide.
