Mom and Dad and M walked deep into the ravine to the mouth of
the spring and found the Wise Woman sitting on the black
granite stone, cushioned with thick green moss. She was busy
bundling dried herbs and medicinal plants—hyssop, fireweed, and
wild cucumber—and arranging freshly gathered mushrooms on
spruce boughs. The dwarf white roses (rosa blanda) were
blooming, and several kinds of vetches—purple, white, and
penciled—were twining among the grass. The scent of roses filled
the air, as did the loud hum of bees and dragonflies.
