Scotland, Yorkshire, North East (SYNE) Lunch

This year’s lunch was a high tea celebrated in style in the Palm Court of the
5* Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh. Members came together from a wide geographical
spread for the day with BPW UK President Jo Kinsey travelling the furthest to join
us.

The hotel recently featured on a TV programme about the great hotels of the
world. We were not aware of rubbing shoulders with the glitterati as we failed to
spot any celebrities. However, the hotel has been the venue of choice for many of
them over the years. To name but a few: Sophia Loren; Paul McCartney; Elizabeth
Taylor; Sean Connery and Laurel & Hardy. Oprah Winfrey filmed an episode of her
show there. During her stay, J K Rowling finished “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hal-
lows”. It was the venue for the pre-wedding breakfast of Zara Phillips as 300 of the
wedding guests were staying there.

The food was simply delicious and was accompanied by the possibility of
choosing from 88 different loose leaf teas. On departure, each guest was given a
small tin of speciality Balmoral Tea. Champagne could also be chosen as an accom-
paniment to the food. Decadence was certainly the theme of the afternoon.

A great time was had by all. Enjoyable as our regular Zoom calls are, it was
wonderful being able to meet in person.

Homeward bound, with stomachs full and bank balances much reduced, we
struggled to juggle handbags with the takeaway boxes.
