“Elsie MacGill, known as “the Queen of the Hurricanes” and the first women in the world
to earn an aeronautical engineering degree, was honoured in 2023, long after her death.
The Royal Canadian Mint created a commemorative “loonie” entitled “honouring Elsie
MacGill”. Members of BPW Canada were present for this auspicious occasion.”

“As late as the 1970’s, women in the Isle of Man were not eligible for jury service. Finding
this unacceptable, BPW Isle of Man, set about getting the law changed. With help and advice
from both Tynwald, (the IOM Parliament) and Westminster, a Bill was put forward. I can't
remember exactly the sequence of green papers, white papers etc it went through before
acceptance and being read out at the annual open air meeting of Tynwald on Tynwald Hill.
And so BPW changed the law.
