Introduction to St. Kitts & Nevis
St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) is a twin island independent Federation located in
the eastern Caribbean. The first inhabitants of the islands – Kalinagos – referred to
St. Kitts as Liamuiga meaning fertile land; and Nevis as Oualie meaning land of
beautiful waters. A former British colony, the islands gained independence in
September 1983.
The flag, designed by local seamstress Edrice Lewis, has five colours: Green –
fertile lands, Yellow – year-round sunshine, Black – African heritage, Red – struggle
from slavery through colonialism to independence and the two white stars represent
hope and liberty. The lyrics and music of the national anthem, ‘O Land of Beauty!’
are the handiwork of local musician Kenrick Georges. You can learn more about it
here. Interestingly, this was picked as the winner of a competition where the re-
sults were announced by BPW St. Kitts founding member Pamela Wall.
St Kitts and Nevis has many attractions which will be featured in a later
Newsletter article. The most notable may be the Brimstone Hill which was commonly
referred to as ‘the Gibraltar of the West Indies’ and is a UNESCO World Heritage
site. Aside from the historical and cultural significance, the site is commonly used for
picnics, weddings and receptions.
