Status of bill: 5/18/2023. Held in Assembly Appropriations committee.
Public Policy Statement: CFBPW supports the elimination of all violence perpetrated against
women, including human trafficking and sexual violence, and supports the protection of victims’
rights.
AB 518 Author, Wicks. Paid family leave for Chosen Family member
This bill would expand eligibility for benefits under under the paid family leave program to in-
clude individuals who take time off work to care for a seriously ill designated person. The bill
would define “designated person” to mean any individual related by blood or whose association
with the employee is the equivalent of a family relationship. The bill would authorize the em-
ployee to identify the designated person when they file a claim for benefits. The bill would make
conforming changes to the definitions of the terms “family care leave” and “family member.”

Status of bill: 9/13/2023. Ordered to inactive file in the Senate (after amendment to
tie the bill to AB 575, so AB 575 becomes operative only if both bills are enacted, and
if AB 518 is enacted last). Missed 9/14 deadline for passing.
Public Policy Statement: CFBPW promotes equity, political and economic self-sufficiency for
working women in all phases of their lives through advocacy, education and information
CFBPW (also) supports full access to affordable, quality dependent care and housing.
AB 524 Author, Wicks Family Caregiver Anti-discrimination Act:
This bill prohibit employment discrimination based on family caregiver status, as defined, and
would recognize the opportunity to seek, obtain, and hold employment without discrimination
because of family caregiver status as a civil right, as specified.

Public Policy Statement: CFBPW Promotes workplace equality through support of pay equity,
advancement opportunities and elimination of all forms of discrimination.
AB 549 Author(s) Wilson, Bauer-Kaban, Calderan - Gender Discrimination -CEDAW
All state agencies and departments in consultation with the Commission on the Status of Wom-
en and Girls, shall conduct an evaluation of their own departments to ensure that the state
does not discriminate against women through the implementation of state policies and pro-
grams, including the allocation of funding and delivery services.
