Mariella Camilleri, President of BPW Malta

                                                 Empowering Girls2Leaders

The BPW UK Wednesday Talk on Wednesday 2 November was an excellent presentation by
Mariella Camilleri, President of BPW (Valletta) Malta on the current status of Girls2Leaders
which is a dynamic initiative developed from the award-winning (from the European Parlia-
ment) The Charter of the Girls’ Rights as established by BPW Europe.

The campaign drew breath on 11 October 2017 which is the UN International Day of the Girl
Child. Many of you will remember that The Girl Child was the 12th and last Critical Area for
Concern of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action, this PFA being the first global policy docu-
ment on women that included a specific focus on the Girl Child.

         Aim of the Campaign
“This initiative seeks to get more girls encouraged to aspire to leadership roles by connect-
ing them with successful female role models in their home country. Through this unity on
such an important issue. We demonstrate in practice the impact of having more women
leaders in all aspects of life”

On 9 September 2021, it was proposed that IFBPW in collaboration with the Malta Founda-
tion for the Well-being of Society established by Her Excellency President Emeritus Marie
Louise Coleiro Preca and Women Political Leaders (WPL) would create a joint campaign
throughout Europe and the rest of the world combining two initiatives: Charter of the
Girls’ Rights and Girls2Leaders. Sadly, WPL had to withdraw because of personnel
         shortages.

In January 2022 IFBPW created a Working Task Force to follow the Girls2Leaders Campaign
on behalf of the organization for a period of 3 years. Mariella Camilleri would chair this Task
Force and chose to nominate Young BPW members from across Europe to be a part of it.

It was proposed that a series of 5 Webinars be run using the 9 steps of the Charter of the
Girls’ Rights. These Webinars have taken place through the year on the following themes:

         1. Protection and Safeguarding
         2. Inclusion
         3. Girls Rights are Human Rights

         4. Stereotypes
         5. Health

                                                                                                                                                                                   …/...
