P. 37
Lucy Cavendish College has seen two major changes this academic year. The college is
now co-educational and also takes students from the age of 18.
The BPW Ruth Tomlinson Memorial Fund gives an annual award of up to £1000 for a
student of the College with a disability. The Committee are pleased to announce that the
awardee for 2021-22 is Oscar Sharples.
We are delighted to include Oscar’s paragraph below:
My name is Oscar and I study Human, Social, and Political Sciences. I absolutely love my
course and feel extremely lucky to be in the position to study it. Last year, after many years
of mental health crises, I was diagnosed with Autism and Emotionally Unstable Personality
Disorder. Although I am incredibly grateful to have been given answers as to why I have strug-
gled so much, I have experienced a lot of barriers to getting support following diagnosis. This
award would give me the opportunity to access treatment for EUPD, specifically Dialectical
Behavioural Therapy. DBT would improve my emotional regulation and crisis management
skills. It is a huge burden to try to manage my symptoms, so this award and access to treat-
ment would massively help me to thrive on my course. I would cherish the opportunity to
reach my full potential in my time at Lucy.
Oscar has also given his permission to use the quote in our Annual Review.
The RTMF Committee consider Oscar to be a very worthy recipient.
