VALLEY SUNSET DISTRICT REPORT


         Valley Sunset District will hold its Winter Conference on Saturday, February 3, at the Burbank First United
         Methodist Church.  Chaired by the district’s Members-at-Large, the meeting will focus on legislation and pub-
         lic policy.


         District Public Policy Chair Elaine Aftergut will lead the review and discussion of the current CFBPW Public
         Policy Statement and focus issues. Proposed amendments will be presented at the Annual Public Policy Con-
         ference.


         The invited guest speaker is Susan Schwartz of the Los Angeles Bar Association.  Ms. Schwartz’s presentation
         will focus on How to Evaluate Judicial Candidates.


         Burbank member Gloria Salas was honored by State Senator Anthony Portantino as a California Woman of
         Empowerment.  This was a new category of state honors, created specifically for Gloria.  Valley Sunset Dis-
         trict congratulates her and thanks her for her many hours of service to the community and especially her efforts
         to empower all women.


         Burbank BPW adopted a family for the holiday.  They provided this single mother and her three children with
         four boxes of food, gift cards and presents for everyone.  The club’s January meeting speaker was the presi-
         dent of the Burbank Tournament of Roses who told about her 50-year career as a Rose Parade volunteer.


         Hollywood BPW held its first in-person meeting of the year at the historic Hollywood Women’s Club. Past
         State President Lynn Brandstater was honored with the club’s annual Susan B. Anthony award for her service
         to BPW.  Members and guests enjoyed a lovely catered lunch.  President Marjory Hopper welcomed members
         from Valley Sunset and Sierra Mar Districts, as well as a number of guests.


         Conejo Valley BPW celebrated the holidays with an elegant Glitter Dinner at the beautiful Westlake Village
         Boccaccio’s Restaurant.  The evening’s events also included welcoming a new member, Pearl Spaho.  Pearl is
         a student at Moorpark College.  The club’s January meeting program was a review of the CFBPW Public Poli-
         cy Statement.


         On December 2 Valley Sunset District held their annual holiday party at the Smoke House Restaurant in Bur-
         bank.  Hollywood BPW hosted the luncheon.  In lieu of a gift exchange, members were asked to contribute to
         the California BPW Education Fund.  More than $600 was added to the loan fund through the generosity of
         VSD members.
