Stratford-upon-Avon: just as you like it
s a student of LITERATURE, I had always been captivated by the magical and commendable playwright of all
times- William Shakespeare. He is like the ever shining North Star whose brightness never turns pale. To me, he
Ais the greatest of all writers with the most universal appeal. Though he lived some four hundred fifty years ago,
his plays and poems still enthral audiences worldwide. The power of his poetry and the depths of his understanding of
the human condition transcend limitations of language and of space.
It is said, “There are no limitations to any of our dreams.” So, during my student life I also dreamt to meet this literary
genius, although I knew meeting him physically was not possible! Still, at one corner of my heart I cherished this
dream and never allowed it to fade away. May be, due to this perseverance, in my later life, I got the chance of visiting
Shakespeare’s birth place. I visited Stratford-upon-Avon on 8th May, 2011.
Shakespeare’s birthplace is maintained and taken care of by the “Shakespeare Birthplace Trust”. It was founded in the
year 1847. To this time, Shakespeare’s property incorporates a beautiful garden, Mary Arden’s Farm, Palmer’s Farm
and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage along with Shakespeare’s own house where he was born. Till date this Trust takes care of
the five Tudor Houses directly connected to Shakespeare which is now considered as an important Tourist spot, highly
beneficial for the nation. To my greatest surprise, I also found a TAGORE Bust in Shakespeare’s garden!
The most famous Hollywood actor ‘Dame Judi Dench’ is one of the volunteers and visitors of this particular place.
