President Trump and Congress reached an impasse today that revolved around the president’s insistence that $5.7 billion — for a border wall, fence, barricade, beautiful piece of art, corten steel slats, three-story building, dam, dike, concrete hurdles, rampart or whatever anyone calls it — be included in the budget. It appears that the breach is too wide to close before midnight tonight when 800,000 government employees will be either furloughed or be required to work with no pay.
The president refused to budge after Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Nancy Pelosi offered their most generous concession and compromise to date. In exchange for allowing DACA students a path to citizenship, Pelosi and Schumer agreed to recruit 100,000 volunteers to draw a line in the sand with a stick along the 2000-mile U.S./Mexico border.
Democrats and Republicans seemed to be equally intrigued, one even calling it a figure of speech.
When asked to comment, Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said, “Honestly, the idea is pure genius. Had I not known, I would have attributed it to President Trump himself. I say let’s vote to approve within the hour. Government reopened, mission accomplished! Happy New Year!”
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a strong proponent of border security became petulant when he explained how he and the president made amends earlier in the day, “Over lunch the president said that the wall
