Key Design Principles

Aerodynamics:

Many of colanis designs , his cars in particular, are heavily influ-

enced by aerodynamics. Colani was passionate about designing

vehicles that were engineered to be more feul e cient and better

for the environment. Having a vehicle more aerodynamic means

less drag, so the less feul you burn. Aerodynamics can also be

seen in some of his product design such as his schimmel pegasus

piano.

Biodynamics and Ergonomics:

Colani rejected straight angular lines, his reasoning being “the

earth is round, all heavenly bodies are round, they all move on

round elliptical orbits.......why should i join the stray ing mass who

want to make everything angular.” From this thought process he

focused on giving his designs smooth, rounded, organic shapes

that were functional, ergonomic, futuristic products for their time.

Polished Plastic in strong colors:

Coining the name “plastic Guru”, one of colanis most iconic

design features is the rounded, polished plastic in strong colours.

Also he never used two strong colours in one piece, he tended to

go for one solid colour in most designs.
