Introduction
In today’s ever-changing world we as humans are realising our impact on
the environment, exploring the options and taking actions in order to keep
the needed balance. That is where the sustainable design theory comes
in the view, helping designers make more eco-conscious products. But
can the sustainable design theory be enhanced to be even more effective?
Using emotional design that allows designers to create user-product bond
Behavioural throughout multiple practices will allow the sustainable design to be more
efficient, creating then eco-conscious, high-longevity products.
And so, this essay will introduce and explore the emotional design theory
Don Norman’s within D. Norman’s three levels -visceral, behavioural and reflective, and the
Three levels of role it plays in the everyday-decision making and the user-product relation-
Emotional design Visceral ship as explained in D. Norman’s book (2004). It will also touch on the sus-
tainable design, practices used within such as biodegradability, products
life cycle and the ethical considerations, and why is it needed in today’s
society as outlined by Ruffino (2021). Furthermore, it ponders the certain
possibilities of the enhancement of the sustainable practices with the emo-
Reflective tional design, especially throughout the Emotionally Sustainable Design
(EDD) toolbox developed by Wu et al. (2021), where using the emotional
design levels improves the whole design process and eventually has the
potential to create a product that is highly sustainable due to the deep us-
er-emotional attachment. Lastly it considers the misuse of emotional design
within the ecological practices and its impact on the environment and the
green consumer’s mind-set which leads to skepticism and greenwashing
as mentioned and researched by Andreoli and Minciotti (2023) and Lemke
and Luzio (2014).
