The Suramadu Bridge, the Longest Bridge in Indonesia

The Suramadu Bridge or in Bahasa called Jembatan Suramadu, also known as the Surabaya–
Madura Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge between Surabaya on the island of Java and the town of
Bangkalan on Madura Island in Indonesia. Opened in June 2009, the 5.4-km bridge is the longest in
Indonesia and the first bridge to cross the Madura Strait. The Suramadu Bridge is with a combined
suspension of 5438 meter the longest bridge in Indonesia. The construction costed 4.5 trillion Rupiah
(around 450 million dollar).

There are 3 parts of this bridge. The first one is fly-over on both side, covering 1458 meters
from Surabaya and 1818 meters from Madura. The second part is the connector of 627 m each. The
last part is the central bridge which consists of 2 192 m side-extensions and 434 m main extension.

Though the aim of this bridge is to fasten development in Madura in both infrastructure and
economy, the bridge has become a popular place to visit for tourists and locals alike. The view from
here is very interesting. In the afternoon you can see Madura Sea from the bridge and this will make
you feel you’re flying above the sea. Or while looking to the Surabaya direction, you can see
Jalesveva Jayamahe Statue and Kenjeran Beach. Night visits at Suramadu bridge are also fascinating
