Riding the
RolleR CoasteR
Since the start of the worldwide pandemic, we have had a roller coaster of emotions. First there was shock over what is happening, then we started to thaw and feel, anger, disbelief, frustration, sadness, happiness, out of control, in control. It was all over the map. Some were feeling guilty if they shared that they were happy as this was their ideal life.
The point is that all of what we are feeling and going through is okay. We have gone through a collective trauma as it was unexpected, dramatic, isolating and we had no plan for it. We won’t know the full lasting affects for many years to come I suspect. Depending on your past painful experiences, you may have
weathered this well or not. During this time, people needed, more than ever, to create connections in new ways. If this has shown us anything, it is how much people
require connection, relationship and belonging.
We had to be creative in how we did business, how we communicated, how we
showed up. Parents had to become teachers, as well as doing their regular jobs. People lost jobs, were isolated. There was always an undercurrent of being or
doing well and not being or doing well.
I had clients text or call me saying they were so grateful for the tools they
learned to manage the overwhelming stress that they were feeling, that they were able to handle it in a much healthier way and create a plan for how to get through whatever happens.
So, what can you do to ride out the roller coaster? Be kind to yourself and know that it’s okay to feel good one moment and not the next. We
are emotional beings and every experience has an emotion, like it or not. Sometimes you need to yell, or jump up and down to move big energy. We don’t
always have to be Zen. Your kids’ emotional health is far more important than missing lessons in school. Kids who are happy and well-adjusted will
manage better than those feeling anxious, panicked and hating this experience.
Make a plan daily for what you need to do to feel in control of your day. Be present to what is. Things happen but it is the
emotions and perception that we place on that thing that creates the view of good or bad. There will always be ups and downs in
life, but when you prepare with strategies to keep you healthy, you will be better equipped to ride the rollercoaster.
