     HOME INSPECtOR
Growing up, home inspections never factored into my dream career. Fifteen years ago I was just starting my career as an emergency nurse and thought I had my life figured out. Fast forward a few years and I was burned out and coming home to raise my children while my husband worked in the oil patch. Being home with my family helped me realize what my husband was
missing out on, and what I would miss out on if I went back to nursing. We looked at all kinds of business opportunities and nothing felt like a fit, until home inspections.
It was a bit of a challenge for me to wrap my head around what I needed to know to be a great home inspector, as my background was extremely different. When I was first
getting started I was told by a few people – including inspector colleagues - that if I did not have a background in the construction industry, I should not be inspecting
houses. While some realtors love the idea of a female inspector and a husband and wife team, a few have expressed concern that perhaps a woman should not
be doing this. I try not to let any of this get to me, and usually it just takes the heartfelt gratitude from one client to help me overcome any doubts about being
capable to do this work. While there are areas that I may not be the expert in, by working with my husband I can get around that - we each work in the areas that
we are strong, which means that our clients get a top notch inspection.
One area of my work that I still struggle with is staying in touch with our realtors regularly. Years ago I worked as a telemarketer to put myself through
nursing school and some days I have that same mentality of not wanting to
pick up the phone to make the next call. Because of this, I have to maintain the mindset of what is more important to me in this moment, my fear of calling someone or my desire to keep my husband out of the oil patch and at home with us while building an amazing business.
One of the best aspects of my work is that I am no longer helping people on some of the worst days of their lives but I am helping them at what is one of the happiest times of their lives. I am proud that
my husband and I are working to make sure that your dream house is safe for you and your family to call home.
