The Epsilon Gamma Omega (EGO) Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® celebrated
2024 Earth Month with various activities that protect our environment. The Enhance Our Environment Ini-
tiative began the month of April by participating in a Community Cleanup Day with the City of Hunts-
ville's Green Team on Saturday, April 6th. Sorors picked up litter around Brahan Spring Park to focus on
reducing waste in the Huntsville community. On Saturday, April 13th, members from EGO, Gamma Mu,
and Omicron Zeta Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® looked lovely in our shades of
green at our Joint Chapter meeting to bring awareness to implementing environment friendly practices. The
Community and Home Gardens subcommittee presented a Garden Literacy activity at Girls, Inc. on Tues-
day, April 16th. This was a collaboration with EGO's Uplift Our Local Community Initiative to educate
approximately thirty girls on the importance of protecting our environment. The girls planted Zinnia plants
and received a reusable bag to transport their plant home. Members from the Gamma Mu and Omicron
Zeta Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® joined to guide the girls with this activity.
On Saturday, April 20th, EGO and Gamma Mu Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®
participated in two events. We collaborated with the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama with its
Huntsville Shredding and Electronics Recycling Day, where approximately twelve EGO Sorors contributed
items for shredding and/or electronics recycling. Additionally on April 20th, we collaborated with the City
of Huntsville's Green Team for 2024 Earth Day at Hays Nature Preserve. Sorors served in various roles,
such as greeters and event counters while others participated in fun environmental activities with the
Huntsville community. EGO's Empower Our Families Initiative “ YLI participants also visited Hays Na-
ture Preserve for the Earth Day festivities. Finally, EGO concluded its celebration of Earth Month on Fri-
day, April 26th by partnering with Alabama A&M University (AAMU) and the Gamma Mu Chapter of Al-
pha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®
to plant a tree at the Carver Complex and
twelve shrubs at Terry Hall on the campus
of AAMU in observance of Arbor Day. This
Arbor Day Tree Planting event was also an
opportunity to collaborate with EGO's Gen-
eration Next Committee and AAMU's Envi-
ronmental Science Club, as we celebrate the
importance of trees in our environment. All
Enhance Our Environment Areas of Focus
were highlighted during Earth Month. A
huge thank you to all Sorors for your sup-
port of our 2024 Earth Month activities!
