EPSILON GAMMA OMEGA
he Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was organized at Alabama
A&M College, now Univeresity, on March 19, 1949. The charter members are: J.E.T.
Bulls, Ruth B. Carter, Anne Gardner Eady, Lilease Hall, E. Bernice Johnson, Iola
Seaborn, Evangeline Spillman, Alpha Kappa Alpha Founder Harriet Terry, Fannie P.
. Regional Director Mamye E. Williams came from
Thompson and Edith Shockley Wolfrey. Regional Director Mamye E. Williams came from
Miami, Florida to charter the chapter and lead the initiation of six members: Mamie G. Browne, Frances
Higgins, Lena Long, Eunice Moore, Dorothy Simpson, and Placidia Thigpen.
From an initial group of 16 talented women, Epsilon Gamma Omega has become a chapter of more than 475
members who address local community needs while implementing international Alpha Kappa Alpha
programs. It has fully embraced the 2018-2022 program theme, Exemplifying Excellence Through
Sustainable Service, and continues to be a regional and international award-winning chapter. Epsilon Gamma

Omega’s signature program is the Debutante Presentation and Ball, now in its 63 year. More than 2500 young
ladies have benefited from the scholarships and training of the debutante program

egional Director Mamye Williams also chartered Gamma Mu, an undergraduate chapter,
at Alabama A&M College on March 19, 1949. Since that date, Epsilon Gamma Omega
has remained Gamma Mu’s sponsoring chapter. Charter members are Foster Price,
Katherine Higgins, Maureen Horton Davis-Cathey, Inez Mims-Petty, Olavenia Rush, Louise
Gordon Wyatt, Margaret Bostic, Helen Conley, Georgia Parker Snodgrass, Sophilene Bonham,
and Betty J. Lane. The charter members began a tradition of strong campus involvement and
leadership that continues until this day. Members also diligently implement sorority programs

of May 31, 1987, on the campus of the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH).
Ernestine Stoner spearheaded the movement to charter a chapter and later became

Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter was Omicron Zeta’s first graduate advisor. Like Gamma Mu, Omicron Zeta
has provided a highly visible campus presence and effective Alpha Kappa Alpha service.
