The EGO University subcommittee facilitated a joint officers training for Gamma Mu
and Omicron Zeta Chapters entitled Excellence in Best Practices for a Healthy Chapter.
Epsilon Gamma Omega Basileus, Dr. Cheryl R. Davis, provided greetings and set the tone for
an impactful session. EGO University lead, Dr. Datie Priest, began the session with a thought-
provoking check-in question: “Why do best practices matter for effective leadership?” Sorors
were able to “turn & talk” and shared what they discussed.
Framing the training were basic questions Why? How? What? Who? When? and Where?
The “Why?”—Second Century Leadership designed to “Equip leaders with a thorough
understanding of the requirements and responsibilities of the offices they hold and work within
that framework to foster Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s ideals and principles” was based upon
So Now You’re Elected with promotion of Sisterly Relations as an overarching precept.
For the “How?” Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter officers engaged their undergraduate
counterparts in a collaborative reflection session on how best practices. This 1:1/small group
breakout time allowed for a more intimate and robust discussion of what best practices look like
in real time between the graduate and undergraduate officers. The session assessment led by
Membership Chairman, Dawn Stanley, was well-played in the form of AKA Jeopardy. The
undergraduate sorors were more than eager to share their knowledge of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc.’s expectations for chapter operations, protocol, parliamentary procedure, and
more!
As the event ended, Standards Chairman, Sharon Gresham, shared the “What?”—
essentials for how we should operate re: evaluation protocol per the Standards Resource Guide.
Gamma Mu and Omicron Zeta sorors were given a survey link at this time to provide EGO
University with feedback that will be used to better support them moving forward.
Soror Datie Priest wrapped up the session by recapping the training and sharing
Excellence in Execution Who? When? Where? with the sorors. An expectation for monthly
engagement between graduate and undergraduate sorors was shared. The training was
adjourned after a look ahead to future training.
