Over 160 sorors from Epsilon Gamma Omega registered for the 2019 Chapter Retreat!
We were refreshed, renewed and reinvigorated on August 10, 2019!!! With a focus on
membership and growth, the 2019 EGO Chapter Retreat was a huge success!!! The
Membership Committee coordinated the event and partnered with Target 2 on the pre-Retreat
Walk. Workshops, icebreakers/teambuilding activities, door prizes, lunch and a question and
answer session marked the retreat. Each participant was presented with a bag, pen and
notepad commemorating the retreat.
Soror Gina Jones provided an inspiring meditation asking do we want to be balcony
people or basement dwellers. Soror Phyllis Roberts led the teambuilding activity which
encouraged sorors to meet one new soror and get to know her during the retreat. Participants
were welcomed by Soror Cheryl R. Davis, Basileus, who also provided the 2020 vision outline
and explained the upcoming survey to obtain member input on upcoming activities to address
the strategic plan.
Soror Dawn C. Stanley, Membership Chairman, outlined the agenda for the day, which
included three breakout workshops that employed various techniques including panels,
electronic scavenger hunt, and singing. Soror Lorraine Lacy and the Technology Committee led
the interactive scavenger hunt to allow sorors the hands-on experience of locating information
on the various electronic portals. “Give Me That Old AKA Spirit” was presented creatively by
Soror LaDonna McCann, who surveyed sorors to determine what kind of sister are we, led the
sorors in singing uplifting songs and stressed lifelong active membership. Soror Tonya Wood
conducted the ‘Walking Hand in Hand: Mentoring” session. Sorors were reminded of the need of
mentors and provided ideas for mentor-mentee activities. A panel of mentors and mentees
provided insight on how they interacted and developed long term relationships – Sorors
Veronica Belser and Soror Dana Waller, who have been mentor-mentee since Soror Dana’s
college days and continued after she transitioned to EGO. Soror Dana Battle provided insight
into the undergraduate mentor program.
All came together to learn “Leadership Lessons: Does the Shoe Fit?” from Soror Blannie
Batt and Soror Dawn Stanley, former chapter basilei. Soror Dawn asked sorors what questions
do you ask when buying shoes. These questions can apply when understanding your leadership
roadmap and destination such as How high a heel am I comfortable wearing?/What level of
leadership am I interested? How long will I be standing?/ How long is the commitment?
Then, Soror Blannie expertly covered the Five Levels of Leadership – Position,
Permission, Production, People Development and Personhood. The difference between a leader
and manager was explained. A leader is great, not because of her power or position, but
because of her ability to empower others. Success without a successor is failure. The Retreat
ended with lunch, numerous door prizes and a question and answer session.
