Dad would know for sure!
Quote 3: “Don’t lay out for the count of ten.”
My Interpretation: Get up, even if you have to crawl. Strain to get up, even if the count is nine and three-quarters.
You have to fight to stay up. Don’t give up on life or hard work in your pursuit to achieve success.
Quote 4: “Always keep a dollar in your pocket.”
My Interpretation: Don’t spend your last. Now, this has not always worked for me.
Quote 5: “One dollar will always bring more.”
My Interpretation: I repeat, this practice did not work for me (I’m ashamed to say). Some folks are slower than others
to mature or catch on to it.
My Father was very strict when it came to dating or courting. He didn’t trust any of the neighborhood boys that I liked and neither
did my Mom. Being a teacher, she got to know most of the children in the Georgetown area. From my father’s perspective, he saw
how the young men behaved after dark or on the street corner. That’s why he knew for sure!
Here is a prime example. One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit me. When my dad got home and saw him, he immediately
told my Mom that the boy would have to leave our house. My mother replied, “But, he’s a nice boy.” In a much harsher tone, dad
repeated himself and much louder said, “He must go, now!”
My guest and I had been sitting in the remodeled living room, and my mother called me to the back bedroom. She told me, “It’s best
that the young man leaves immediately; otherwise, your father will come forth and boldly throw him out!” So, I went back to the
living room and said, “I’m sorry, but you will have to leave.”
