Daisy Pearl Brown, my maternal grandmother, was a dignified, sophisticated, and stately woman who was born in Congaree, South
Carolina. She smoked a pipe from her Cherokee traditions. In fact, she had a pipe for every day of the week, including a very special
mahogany pipe for Sunday.
Matriarch Brown was a bulwark in the Sanford Community and a true role model. She was always lending her helping hands, which
earned her a “Mother of the Year Award” from the Negro/Colored community during the segregation years. Grandma’s hands were
always as busy as a bee. She was President of the Busy Hands Club, President of the Deaconess Board, Member of the Senior
Missionary Society, and served for many years as sponsor of the Father’s Day Programs. My grandmother always incorporated the
