THE UNIVERSITY

The University of Madras was initiated on 5th September 1857. It was

incorporated under the act of the Legislative council of India. The university

buildings were cataloged on the model of London University.

Throughout the nineteenth century, it has ameliorated and expanded to a
greater extent. It has given birth to and nourished many daughter universities
in the whole of South India.

Marina proudly accommodates the main campus of the University

of Madras. It displays the Senate House and the library with its supercilious

clock tower. It also has a huge centenary building with a large auditorium.

These architectural delights of the Chepauk campus speak its celebrated

history and heritage.

Since its inception, the university has been the hallmark of academic

excellence. It has spearheaded professional excellence and quality education
in the country. It has given rise to many professional and enterprising students.

“University with potential for excellence”.
