it worsen? “Will there be a vaccine?” “Will I always have to isolate and be lonely? “Why am I so anxious and unfo- cused?” These are natural concerns, flowing from normal situational depression. Speculation and fear about the fu- ture will not diminish the threat or make it go away.
We recommend that we return to the basic reason for our existence in this world and understand the purpose and reason for everything that happens in our lives. In doing so, we eliminate the “why?,” “how?,” and “when?,” and replace them by believing that God has been and will always be with us for all the days of our lives. Everything happens in God’s time, not ours. These thoughts will make all our doubts, fears, and concerns disappear.
Distractions, such as work activities, hobbies, or en- gaging with others (while maintaining social distance) are the keys to our success and happiness. Also consider that when we extend a caring, compassionate hand to anoth- er, we divert attention away from ourselves and, instead, focus on making a difference in the world —even if that means evoking just one smile.
Suggestions for Mitigating Stress Caused By Situational Depression
Mental health professionals suggest that we reach out to others, either on social media, video chat, or in our home environment. If we are fortunate to live with fam- ily members, spend more time with them. Play more with the children, look into the eyes of your spouse or partner and express love and admiration. Compliment one anoth- er. Call someone and verbalize your affection and caring, send notes of loving kindness via email, text, or an ecard.
Also, consider adopting a pet. Animals are amazingly intuitive. They love unconditionally, and they pick up on our moods, help us to feel better, and teach us how to be in
