The disadvantages of distance learning for upper- school, university, and post-graduate students lie in the fact that higher education requires initiative, discipline, and willingness to engage in self-monitoring and sched- uling. Educators set the standards and expectations that compel some students (who would not otherwise be in- spired to learn) to ‘show up’ and be the best of themselves.
Aside from the learning experience, most older students thrive in a social environment where they can interact with peer groups, exchange ideas, pose numerous questions, and participate in discussions. This is especially true of adolescents, who thrive on the excitement of being with people their age and creating lifetime memories.
The prom is a special moment in everyone’s life and be- comes a kind of right-of-passage ceremony before gradua- tion. While online substitutes can mimic such gatherings, they cannot replace the joy of a hug, a handshake, or oth- er interpersonal displays of affection while engaged in a shared experience.
For university and post-graduate students, the same holds true. The ability to engage in constructive dialogues with instructors, develop critical thinking skills, and exchange opinions in the moment is often lacking in a ‘remote classroom’ setting. As mentioned, students must be extremely focused, self-motivated, and willing to
