they both remembered what Brahma had said and
started to work. Nepa started freezing water into ice
and snow and sprinkled it on the peaks. On the low-
er parts, Ala would burn the place. Then he would
put out the fire, so that it would remain hot. But
they didn’t know how to work together. Nepa had
said, “There is no way we’re working together.” Ala
had said, “I won’t work with her.” But they knew if
they didn’t work together they would get punished.
They considered this for a while. Then Nepa
said, “Just because fire and water don’t go togeth-
er doesn’t mean we can’t go together.” “Maybe we
should work together.” And they did. Now that they
were friendlier to each other, they could mix their powers, creating a weather that wasn’t too hot
or too cold.
Soon they went to tell Brahma that they had completed their work. When Brahma saw that
they had made friends, inside he felt very happy but he decided not to show it. However he said,
“Well done, Nepa and Ala. You have done brilliant work. As you have worked in this country a lot,
it shall be named after you.”
Nepa and Ala thought for a while. “Naala?” Nepa suggested. “Alepa?” said Ala. “I think
there should be a better name. Now let’s see…..Nepa and Ala……Nep-ah-lah.....no….perhaps
Nepal! Nepal it shall be. That would be a good name.” And that is how Nepal got its name.
