                                                             Speaker Dr. Celia Williamson serves
as the Executive Director for the
                                                             Human Trafficking and Social Justice
Institute School of Social Justice at the
                                                             University of Toledo. Her presentation
was a stark reminder that human
                                                             trafficking is taking place everywhere
                                                             for many reasons:

                                                             1. To get people in to a country illegally
                                                             2. The Sex Trade
                                                             3. Forced Labor
                                                             4. "Mules" to transport illegal items

It’s shocking when you learn how prevalent Modern-day Slavery and Trafficking is,
here in the United States of America, of all places. Such crimes are often described
as an everyday problem hidden in plain sight. A report in July last year found that 1
in 800 people in the United States lives in modern slavery.

Dr. Williamson’s information was especially timely since January is National Slavery
and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Read the entire Proclamation on
the White House website at this link https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-

month-2019/

Our Agency will be learning more about this serious topic as the Regulatory
Compliance Division recently received a grant to establish an Outreach Program
to educate DDS Team Members and customers about Human Trafficking. The
goal is to aide in our State’s efforts in combatting this behavior particularly in the
transportation industry.
