Irma approaching Florida, our Office of
Investigative Services (OIS) received a OIS provides escort to motor coaches buses evacuating Savannah
request from Georgia Emergency residents.
Management Agency (GEMA) Operations
Center to respond to the Savannah Civic
Center to assist in evacuating storm
victims from the Civic Center to Richmond
County. OIS began immediately gathering
personnel and equipment to head that
way. Investigator Jared Smith also began
coordinating with local Savannah
Emergency Coordinators on the details of
the mission. The task was to escort buses
filled with Georgia citizens attempting to
escape the predicted path of Irma. OIS
would lead and follow convoys of buses
using their state issued vehicles with blue
lights and sirens. Fourteen OIS
Investigators geared up and headed
toward the storm by 8:00 pm Friday night.
Investigators Karen Brooks, Linda Davis,
Calvin Heard, Stan Moore, John Keiser,
Roddie White, Tony Knotts, Jimmy Woo,
Scott Slater, Larry McDuffie, Danny Smith,
Jared Smith, Greg Dial, and Lance Taylor
left their families, properties, and
responsibilities to answer the “CALL” in
Southeast Georgia for well over 48 hours
pending the worst storm to ever hit
Georgia. Investigators escorted multiple
bus convoys averaging around seven
buses each run. While on location, DDS
OIS personnel were supported by the
Salvation Army and Chatham County
Officials. All investigators returned home
late Sunday after completing a very
successful mission.
