P. 6
From the Commissioner
Dear Fellow Georgians,
As Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS), and on behalf of the entire DDS Team,
I am pleased to present the DDS Annual Report for fiscal year 2017, in accordance with the requirements set for
in §40-16-2.1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.).
DDS was created as a result of House Bill 501, which was passed by the Georgia General Assembly on March
29, 2005; enacted by former Governor Sonny Perdue on May 2, 2005; and became effective on July 1, 2005. It
is the successor agency of the former Department of Motor Vehicle Safety (DMVS).
Operationally, our most visible responsibility is the driver’s licensing and Identification Card issuance procedures
conducted at the DDS Customer Service Centers throughout the state. DDS has many other functions such as the
regulation of all driver training, driver’s record management, managing one of the busiest call centers in the state
and an impressive team of investigators. I hope you will take the time to learn something new about DDS.
As Commissioner, I am honored to lead such a dedicated team of staff at DDS and to guide this great agency
toward our next phase of achievements, many of which are detailed herein.
Since 2005, DDS has been tremendously successful in improving customer service, advancing technology,
securing the integrity of our services, and protecting the safety and identity of the citizens of Georgia.
We will continue to work in an efficient, ethical, and compassionate manner while providing a vital function in
homeland security and by promoting highway safety. Our expectation is to provide a convenient, time-saving
opportunity for customers to conduct business with us.
We take our customer service responsibilities very seriously, and I encourage you to let me know how we are
doing to meet these goals.
Sincerely,
Spencer R. Moore
Commissioner
