USERS’ GUIDE
Dear Teachers, Parents and Caregivers,
WHY THE 3EzSeries
The 3EzSeries supplementary readers are specially designed to educate, equip and empower
children and young people with basic knowledge and skills __ while at the same time increasing
their literacy outcomes. The short stories fill the existing gap in availability of local content reading
materials. Children and young people have an important role to play in bringing about social
__
change in their homes, schools and communities if educated, equipped and empowered.
HOW TO USE THE 3EzSeries
Help your child /class to read correctly, fluently and with understanding. Engage your child in:
answering and asking questions about the story;
discussing pictures in the story book; telling meanings of new words and expressions;
relating incidents in the story with local experiences at home, school and in the community.
These and other activities help your child/ class to pay attention to important information in the
story and to what takes place around them.
Questions can be asked before, during and after reading the story. Ask questions that help your
child/class to predict, explain, summarize and connect.
Before reading the book: Ask predict questions. Request the child/class to look at the title and the
pictures on the cover page. Ask questions such as: “What do you see in the picture?” What is
taking place in the picture?” What do you think this book will be about?“ Ask more predict
questions during the story. Do this after reading a few pages. Ask questions such as: What do you
think will happen next?”
While reading the book: Ask explain questions. Do this after reading each page or a few pages.
Ask your child / class how and why a character did something __ or how and why a particular
event occurred.
After reading the book: Ask summarize questions. Usually, 3-5 questions are sufficient. The
3EzSeries provides questions which can be asked after reading each of the story books. Conduct
other activities such as asking your child/class to:
retell the story in the proper order using own words;
describe the main events of the story; debate related issues; and
act and enjoy some selected fun.
Ask connect questions. Do this by asking your child/class:
if they have had a similar experience to the one in the story;
what they would have done if they were some of the characters in the story and why.
Furthermore, engage your child/class in a discussion: to identify undesired practices which need to
be discouraged and stopped; and good practices that could be promoted. Ask them to suggest
how this could be done; and the role they could play. Support them to develop and implement a
work plan to do what they have chosen to do.
