- Scented shrubs; flowers & foliage
The fragrance of foliage and flowers adds that extra dimension to a
garden that can transport you to a paradise of your making in an
instant. Scent brings with it pleasure, memories and associations, and its
invisible appeal to every garden.
Shrubs provide that permanent structure to the garden, and part of their charm
is their shade, the cool air that lingers around them, their colourful flowers and
foliage; and the really special ones also emit an enticing aroma too. The flowers of
Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow (Brunfelsia), Buddleia, Gardenia, Orange Jasmine (Murraya
exotica), Viburnum, Natal plum (Carissa), Honeysuckle (Lonicera) and Roses are
decorative but above all they smell heavenly.
Walking through the garden, and brushing past aromatic shrubs such as the Curry
bush (Helichrysum italicum), Curry tree (Murraya koenigii),Wild dagga (Leonotis leonurus)
and Lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora) is like wandering into an exotic souk of
smells, conjuring up distant lands and uplifting the spirits no matter how dreary the
day. S.C (text & photos top: Pixabay; photos bottom by S.C)
