Pre-Kindergarten
At Primrose®, children learn and practice concepts in language and literacy; science, technology, engineering, creative arts and
math (STEAM); social studies; music; physical development and health; and compassion, kindness and life skills continuously
throughout the day as part of our exclusive, integrated Balanced Learning® approach.
Reading Readiness and Writing
WHY: The early years of a child’s life are the most important for literacy development.
• The Primrose Pre-Kindergarten reading curriculum begins with the Primrose Friends Phonics Program to develop
SM
phonemic awareness at which time your child plays with the sounds of language by segmenting words into individual
sounds, blending sounds into words, and substituting sounds to make new words.
• Your child moves on to letter-sound recognition, or phonics, and then to reading and writing.
• Your child develops listening comprehension skills and a love of reading by storytelling and retelling.
Science and Engineering
WHY: Children are natural scientists and engineers. They turn their environment upside down trying to discover how
objects work!
• In the Pre-Kindergarten classroom, your child uses scientific tools to observe, explore, record, ask questions and
formulate and test hypotheses.
• Teachers extend learning by engaging your child in meaningful questioning and discussion and scientific inquiry.
• Your child ventures and explores in open-ended scientific experiences to nurture that natural sense of curiosity.
Mathematics Development
WHY: Positive early experiences with mathematics help children develop confidence and support children’s flexibility,
inventiveness and persistence in solving problems.
• Math is more than counting and recognizing numbers. In the Primrose Pre-Kindergarten math program your child becomes
a confident mathematician while engaging in fun learning experiences.
• Your child recognizes quantities without counting (subitizing), identifies, extends and creates patterns, composes and
decomposes sets of objects. All of these concepts are prerequisite to more complex mathematical operations such as
addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and even algebra.
• Your child develops an understanding of spatial concepts by assembling puzzles, building block structures and arranging
two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes to create representations of objects.
• Playful but purposeful mathematics learning abounds as your child engages in exciting and challenging explorations of
deep mathematical ideas during everyday activities.
Research & Technology
WHY: Research and technology skills are increasingly important for later success in school.
• Through the appropriate use of technology, your child develops confidence in solving problems, writing stories and
reports, developing literacy skills and concepts, and even researching new ideas.
• Technology is more than smartphones or touch tablets. Your child learns that technology is any tool that makes our
work easier.
• Smart technology is for more than playing games. Research and technology experiences in the Primrose classroom
nurture your child’s language development and social interactions while stimulating creativity and problem-solving.
