THE LONG ROAD HOME CROSS COUNTRY TRIP WHY SHIP A NEW CAR WHEN YOU CAN DRIVE ACROSS COUNTRY DRIVING CHAIR MIKE REHAK At some point in the last half of 2019, I decided that after 6 years and over 70,000 fantastic miles of 987 Cayman S ownership, it was time to say goodbye and move on from my first Porsche. I took in the experience of my last HPDE, a final trip to Colorado, and the last Palooza with the 987, with the search for my next Porsche serving as the backdrop. The hunt for the right Porsche is all part of the fun, and Porsche provides so many choices. Rear-engined or mid-engined, manual or PDK, and we will not talk about color options amongst the other numerous options. I loved the mid-engine layout and the manual transmission of my 987, so I began the hunt for a 981 Cayman S, with a healthy list of must haves. As time went on and the needle in the haystack continued to elude me, the list of must haves began to dwindle to a short list: the correct number of pedals, sport chrono, and a color other than silver, white or black. After several months of daily internet surfing, e-mails and phone calls looking for the right car, I found the one. A nicely optioned Racing Yellow 2014 Cayman S with 3 pedals was available at the right price. The only problem was that it was in Phoenix, Arizona. After completing a pre-purchase inspection at Porsche Chandler, and some negotiation, an agreement was reached. Now I just had to figure out how to get the car from Phoenix to Kansas City. I decided that the perfect way to get to know the new car would be to fly out to Phoenix, finalize the deal and drive back my new Cayman. It is an 18 hour drive from Phoenix to Kansas City, and I wasn’t sure if I could do that comfortably on my own over a weekend.
