Centennial Campaign for Cal Maritime
—11—
The oceans remain a mystery in terms of
what we know, what we do not, how climate is affecting them, and what policies need to be in place to protect them as an essential resource. The Oceanography degree program is just one way in which Cal Maritime is directly addressing a major global issue.
The objective of the program is campus-wide ocean literacy. Oceanography majors are required to engage in faculty-directed research projects or research-oriented internships. And all cadets, whether majoring in Oceanography or not, are required to take at least one course in either marine biology or marine ecology.
Campaign investment opportunities include:
• Endowed Professorships to attract the most quali ed and innovative teachers and research scholars.
• Undergraduate Research Program to provide facilities with modern equipment for project prototyping and other visualization and production resources, potentially fund research assistantships, and a cadet research journal of value to both cadets and other education and maritime industry partners.
• Oceanography degree program to provide cadets with additional career options. Funds will help out t our coastal and global training vessels and shoreside facilities with a new faculty and potentially a cadet research lab to address new scienti c inquiry.
