Welcome Back!
As I pondered what to write to kick off this newsletter for the 2022-23 school
year, I received an email from Dr. Hixon letting the literacy specialists know
that 794 teachers visited the Co-op this summer for professional
development in literacy. Wow! This is a testimony of the professionalism
and resilience of Arkansas teachers! Not only did you rest pool side or
venture elsewhere across the country for a well-deserved vacation but also
many of you dedicated time to learning more about how to apply the science
of reading in your classrooms, explore new ways to engage your students
with art integration, create text sets to support critical thinking, analyze
assessment data to reach and teach ALL students, and sought new
approaches to intervention.
As literacy specialists working alongside you in the classroom, within your
PLCs and with your students, we knew last year was a tough one for
educators as we all experienced the aftermath of a world-wide pandemic. We
all worried about learning loss, test scores, classroom management and our
own sanity! We made it, though, and the literacy specialists at the Co-op
want to say “THANK YOU” for your dedication to the students of Arkansas.
Now we move forward, hearing the back-to-school clarion call to teach
another class of young people. Let’s engage them with stories of human
resilience, challenge them to solve the problems of today, and invite them to
share their learning in culturally responsive, multi-modal ways.
We look forward to working with all of you this year. Take care of yourselves
and don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
