Emulgel
• Emulgels combine the properties of emulsions and gels.
o They are prepared by adding suitable gelling agents to an oil-in-water or
water-in-oil system.
• Because of the presence of the oil phase, emulgels are more emollient
(moisturizing and soothing) than aqueous-based gels.
• Typically, emulgels will contain many of the other components present in
conventional hydrogels or hydroalcoholic gels, such as antimicrobial
preservatives, antioxidants and humectants.
• The combination of an aqueous and an oil phase offers greater flexibility to
the manufacturer, particularly for drugs that are poorly soluble in water.
• The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) diclofenac is formulated
as an emulgel (Voltaren Emulgel).
o In this product, liquid paraffin comprises the oil phase and carbomer is
the gelling agent.
