Design for museum
Kengo Kuma has designed many other notable cultural institutions, including the Asakusa Culture
and Tourism Center in Tokyo, the China Academy of Art's Folk Art Museum in Hangzhou, and the
Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Kuma's museum designs are
celebrated for their innovative use of materials, their sensitivity to local context and culture, and
their ability to create spaces that inspire and uplift visitors.
Another notable museum designed by Kengo Kuma is the V&A Dundee in Scotland, which opened
in 2018. The museum is located on the banks of the River Tay and is dedicated to showcasing the
best in design from Scotland and around the world. Kuma's design for the museum takes
inspiration from the rugged coastline of Scotland, with its angular and geometric form intended
to evoke the shape of a cliff face. The building is clad in over 2,500 cast stone panels that create a
rippled effect, reflecting the changing light and weather conditions.
