Design capability for cultural
Kuma's approach to architecture is rooted in the concept of "cultural design," which involves the
integration of local culture and traditions into the design of buildings and spaces. This approach
is exemplified in many of Kuma's projects, which often incorporate elements of traditional
Japanese architecture and design.
One of Kuma's most famous cultural design projects is the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo,
which features a façade made up of thin slats of wood that create a delicate, latticed effect. The
design of the building was inspired by the traditional Japanese technique of "sudare," which
involves weaving together thin strips of bamboo to create screens.
Kuma's cultural design approach is characterized by a deep respect for the history and traditions
of the places where he works, and a commitment to creating buildings and spaces that reflect
and celebrate those traditions.
